Gordon College Reaffirms Policy Prohibiting Homosexual Activity on Campus

Gordon College has reaffirmed its support of a controversial policy that prohibits homosexual activity among students, faculty and staff, according to an email President Michael Lindsay sent Sunday night to members of the college community.

Lindsay’s letter confirmed that Gordon College’s board of trustees had voted unanimously to support the policy – known as the Life and Conduct Statement – and followed a nine-month internal study of the Wenham school’s handling of sexuality on campus. The college reiterated its support for the Life and Conduct statement in a press release Monday,

In addition to supporting the college’s current policy, Gordon College’s trustees also voted to draft a “fuller statement on the college’s understanding of sexuality” as it relates to the school’s mission as a Christian institution, Lindsay’s email said.

“Many of the insights gleaned over the last nine months will be incorporated into this statement, but it will be broader and more inclusive than just issues surrounding homosexuality. All of us in leadership recognize that language matters on this topic, and we want to be as pastorally sensitive as possible,” Lindsay wrote in his email.

The college’s policy on homosexual behavior has been at the center of a national controversy that started last summer. Appointing a working group to study issues related to sexual identity on Gordon College’s campus came in response to concerns expressed by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, or NEASC, which is an accrediting body.
