As two of 32 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, twin brothers Devin and Jason McCourty know high character – and both ambassadors for the NFL are in favor of a second chance for former Rutgers football teammate Ray Rice.
Rice has been free to sign with a NFL team since the beginning of December, when he won an appeal of an indefinite suspension levied by commissioner Roger Goodell after video surfaced showing the then-Baltimore Ravens star running back punching his fiancé during a dispute in an Atlantic City elevator.
Rice and the woman, Janay Palmer, since got married.
“What transpired between him and his fiancé is nothing that I condone or anything of that nature,” said Jason, a star cornerback for the Tennessee Titans, “but at the same time I feel like he’s been given a punishment and it’s not my job to dictate what the punishment is.”
Jason spoke to Rice last week to invite him to the twins’ Tackle Sickle Cell Casino Night fundraiser Saturday at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ in New Brunswick, but Rice will not be among the cast of former Rutgers standouts expected in attendance because he is out of town, Jason said.
The McCourtys and Rice were teammates from 2005-07.
