Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.
First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to UPI, The Islamic State projects an expected surplus of $250 million in its budget of $2 billion for the terrorist organization’s efforts in 2015. Islamic State representatives said in an interview with an arabic news outlet that their budget includes wages for the poor, the disabled and for families of people killed in airstrikes carried out by Iraqi and coalition forces led by the U.S. The terrorist organization plans to use the surplus of $250 million for its war effort. The Islamic State also opened a bank in Mosul, northern Iraq, months after taking control of the city in June 2014.
Second, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to Al Jazeera, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said that he has discussed with Jordan plans to resubmit to the United Nations Security Council a resolution calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state that failed to win enough votes last week. Palestinian officials hope the UN will be more sympathetic to their resolution, demanding an Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories and independence by 2017, although the veto-wielding United States would be all but certain to vote “No” again, as it did on December 30.
Third, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED PERSECUTION — According to the GateStone Institute, in just two months in 2014 nearly 200 Christian churches were destroyed in Nigeria by the Islamic organization Boko Haram and its Muslim allies, as they captured towns and villages in two north-eastern states. In the words of Reverend Gideon Oba-so-gie, the director of Catholic Social Communication in Borno State: “The group’s seizure of territory in both states has seen 185 churches torched and over 190,000 people displaced by their insurgency.” Oba-so-gie added that Boko Haram’s “ransacking and torching” of churches was “sad, heart-aching and potentially dangerous to the territorial integrity and common good of Nigeria.
Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Times of Israel, an alarm system that will detect incoming mortar fire will be installed in Gaza border communities within three to six months. The system, which is currently in development, will give residents of southern communities near the coastal enclave a five-second warning, but will not be able to intercept the shells. During last summer’s 50-day conflict, the Iron Dome system successfully shot down hundreds of projectiles, but it is not equipped to knock down the small, short-range mortar shells. Mortars proved to be one of the deadliest means of attack, claiming the lives of 10 IDF soldiers in one week, as well as several Israeli civilians.
Fifth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the Times of Israel, Israel is poised to ask the U.S. Congress to stop funding the Palestinian Authority, a day after the Israeli government froze $127 million in Palestinian tax revenues collected on Ramallah’s behalf, in response to the Palestinian Authority filing a request to join the International Criminal Court. An Israeli official said that Jerusalem will turn to pro-Israel Congress members to ensure that a law banning funds to the Palestinian Authority should it turn to the ICC be enforced. The Palestinians stand to lose some $400 million per year in US aid.

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Exodus 32:11-14 which reads: “And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand? Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.”
Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.
Israel’s gross rebellion at Sinai with the golden calf places Moses in the position of intercessor. Moses immediately appeals to God for mercy, interceding on Israel’s behalf by using three lines of argument. First, Moses points to God’s recent deliverance of the Hebrews from Egypt. He reminds God that, despite His current fierce wrath, the Hebrews were still His people. God would not have exerted all the power and effort of freeing the people from Egypt if He did not love them and have a unique relationship with them.
Second, Moses raises the matter of God’s reputation among the surrounding Gentile nations, Egypt in particular. If God were to destroy the Hebrews so quickly after the exodus, the Egyptians might well conclude that He removed them from Egypt merely to destroy them. The Egyptians would not respect a god who behaved in that sort of cruel and arbitrary fashion.
Third, Moses brought up God’s solemn covenant oaths to the patriarchs concerning both seed and land. Throughout their relationship, from the burning bush onward, YHWH had always taken great pains to emphasize His identity as the promise-keeping God who remembers the Abrahamic Covenant, not a promise breaker and capricious adjuster of covenants.
YHWH responds favorably to Moses’ petition and adjusts His course of action accordingly. This passage is an excellent reminder that while the Lord’s character is unchanging, He does respond and may alter the course of future events to suit His plan.
If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.
Our second coming quote for today is from Samuel Rutherford. He said, “Oh, that Christ would make long strides! Oh, that he would fold up the heavens as a cloak, and shovel time and days out of the way!”
If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
