Let’s take a quick look at today’s prophecy-related headlines which point towards the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the end of the world as we know it.

First, today, under the Sign category of WARS & RUMORS OF WARS — According to Voice of America News, Kurdish forces in northern Iraq pressed forward with their largest offensive to date against the Islamic State group, moving to secure territory reclaimed from ISIS fighters in a two-day offensive and to capitalize on news of several ISIS leaders’ deaths. Officials said roughly 8,000 Kurdish troops, aided by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, recaptured a large amount of territory and broke a siege on Iraq’s Mount Sin-jar. Thousands of civilians and soldiers from the Yazidi religious minority sect had been trapped there for month. A Kurdish statement said they also recaptured eight villages in their offensive.

Second, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to Bloomberg, President Barack Obama said the U.S. will respond to North Korea’s cyber-assault on Sony Pictures “in a place and time and manner that we choose.” The hackers rendered thousands of computers inoperable and forced Sony to take its entire computer network offline. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it will “impose cost and consequences” on those found to carry out cyber-attacks, though it didn’t name any specific retaliatory actions.

Third, today, under the Sign category of DISTRESS AMONG NATIONS — According to the Associated Press, sternly warning the West that it cannot defang the metaphorical Russian bear, a confident-looking President Vladimir Putin promised on Thursday to shore up the plummeting ruble and revive the economy within two years. While he issued a litany of sharp rebukes against the West, Putin struck a conciliatory note on Ukraine, saying that the rebellious east should remain part of the country, backing a quick exchange of war prisoners and praising his Ukrainian counterpart. Yet he defended Russia’s increased military activities, including Baltic air patrols that NATO says are putting civilian flights at risk, as a necessary response to what he described as Western aggression. Referring to Russia’s nuclear arsenal, Putin said the West is trying to tear out his country’s ‘fangs and claws.’

Fourth, today, under the Sign category of THE TURMOIL IN ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST — According to the BBC, Israeli warplanes have bombed a site in Gaza, in the first such action since the declaration of a truce in August. The air strike was carried out on a Hamas facility in response to a rocket fired earlier from Gaza. An IDF spokesman said the aircraft on Saturday targeted “Hamas terror infrastructure.”

Fifth, today, under the Sign category of INCREASED PERSECUTION — According to the Geeska Afrika Online, International Christian Concern says that it has documented “numerous ongoing land rights battles between churches and their local governments across Ethiopia.” ICC’s Regional Manager for Africa, Cameron Thomas, accused Ethiopia of violating the rights of devoted Christians, saying, “Corrupt officials willing to defend their religion [Islam] rather than the laws they’ve sworn to uphold, are violating Christians’ rights by forcibly closing, destroying and demolishing churches across Ethiopia.” Mobs in Muslim-majority areas of Ethiopia have taken it upon themselves to destroy several church buildings. Reports stated that, in one area, “all the Christians in the city woke up to find notes on their doors warning them to convert to Islam, leave the city or face death.”

The prophetic passage of Scripture we are looking at today is Exodus 12:15 which reads: “Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.”

Allow me to share with you some commentary on this passage from the Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary, edited by Tim LaHaye and Ed Hindson.

A second holiday was established in conjunction with Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is celebrated immediately following Passover for the duration of another seven days, commencing on Aviv (or Nisan) 15. Together, the combined observance of Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread lasts eight days. Although technically two separate holidays, the Bible usually links them together and often treats them as a single unit.

The observance of this holiday is characterized by the strict removal of leaven out from the home. In the Bible, leaven (yeast) is frequently used as a powerful symbol of sin. With the removal of all leaven from the home and diet for the duration of the holiday, the home is symbolically purified and becomes a sin-free zone. This potent custom is still practiced today in the homes of observant Jewish families. In the event that anyone eats food containing leaven during the holiday, the penalty is quite severe—excommunication or even execution.

Both the first and seventh days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread are days of rest. No work is to be done. This seven-day holiday, like the one-day holiday of Passover, is to be observed by Israel in perpetuity as an enduring memorial of the day of Hebrew liberation from Egyptian bondage.

Both Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread are to be observed annually, upon the Hebrews entrance into the land of covenant promise. Emphasis is placed on the older generations passing down the significance of the observances to the younger generations. For some 3,500 years now, the events of Passover have been relayed, generation after generation, from Jewish parents to their children. The meal is an object lesson, a teaching tool for the purpose of recalling God’s mercy, and children have always played a central role in its implementation.

The historical explanation is provided for both the centrality of unleavened bread in the Passover ritual and the ensuing seven-day feast. Armies move on their stomachs, and the Hebrews, in their haste to leave (on what was the first day of the seven-day festival) were to grab only the food they had on hand, their as-yet unleavened bread dough. They were to form the dough into cakes and hoist the pans up onto their shoulders. The sun would then bake the cakes into matzos, or unleavened bread.

If the Lord tarries His coming and we live, we will continue looking at the prophetic passages of the Bible in our next broadcast / podcast.

Our second coming quote for today is from Chrysostom. He said, “In the first advent God veiled his divinity to prove the faithful; in the second advent he will manifest his glory to reward their faith.”

If you are not ready for the return of Jesus Christ, may I encourage you to get ready today by receiving Him as your Savior. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Keep looking up for your redemption draweth nigh. Let us join in the prayer of John the Revelator — “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” God bless you.
