The Des Moines native is one of the most famous names in U.S. track and field. Now Lolo Jones will be going on a date with a Georgia State University college student who asked her out on Twitter.
"This could have gone very bad for me," said Harry Lyles Jr. of Marietta, Ga.
Last year, around this time, Lyles had a common thought about Jones when watching the Olympics.
"I was like, 'Lolo's a pretty good-looking girl there,'" Lyles said.
Eleven months later, Lyles decided to ask Jones on a date. He aimed to do it through social media.
Said Lyles, "I tweeted her, 'If I get 150,000 re-Tweets, you gotta let me take you out on a date.'"
It perhaps seemed harmless -- cute, even. But then, Jones responded.
And the quest was on.
"The notifications were coming in like crazy," Lyles said. "My phone actually crashed three times."
Within two weeks, Bubby got his 150,000 retweets -- an achievement that shocked his newest paramour.
"I should have asked two questions," Jones said in an interview with flotrack.org. "Like, 'Hey, are you legal?'"
