With its Blakeney location overflowing with parishioners, Elevation Church is pursuing a new location in Ballantyne.
The megachurch, which serves nearly 15,000 people weekly, recently raised $8.1 million during a capital campaign to open three new locations in the Charlotte area. A private donation has also allowed the church to open a Toronto location this year.
"It was a series we did to celebrate all God has done so far in the life of our church," said Tonia Bendickson, outreach and communications director for the church. "Because of the generosity of the people, we were able to expand."
Bendickson said that the new Ballantyne location will be on 21 acres at the corner of Lancaster Highway and Johnston Road.
The church wants to construct a 264,000-square-foot building, which would include a 42,000-square-foot worship center with 1,600 seats.
There would also be a 22,000-square-foot children's ministry and a 200,000-square-foot office if the city approves the church's plans.
The rezoning request is pending before the city. A hearing is scheduled for May 20.
"The vision God gave Pastor Steven (Furtick) for our church was that we would reach people far from God. We think if we continue to make space for more people, we'll be able to reach more people," Bendickson said.
The contemporary church, which started in 2006 with seven families from Shelby, has dramatically grown in recent years.
