Rhode Island legislators will vote Thursday on a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. Supporters and opponents expect the legislation to pass the House.
Democratic House Speaker Gordon Fox, who is gay, is backing the legislation. The bill has 42 sponsors in the 75-member House.

Rhode Island already allows civil unions. It is the only state in New England that does not allow gay couples to wed.

Previous efforts to pass gay marriage there have failed. But supporters are hoping to build on national momentum after Maine, Maryland, and Washington state legalized gay marriage.
