Rhode Island's House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage Thursday in a 51 to 19 vote.
The fight now moves to the state Senate where both sides said the bill's fate is uncertain.
Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed is opposed to same-sex marriage but she has said she won't stop a committee vote.
Both sides are divided on whether the full Senate will ever get to vote.
"We have to be quite honest that with the makeup of the judiciary committee, that this bill won't see the light of day," Chris Plante, with the National Organization for Marriage, said.
Rhode Island is the only state in New England that doesn't allow gay couples to wed.
Previous efforts to pass gay marriage there have failed. But supporters are hoping to build on national momentum after Maine, Maryland, and Washington state legalized gay marriage.
