Pastor, author and “Breakthrough” producer Devon Franklin is shifting the culture’s dialogue about manhood in his new upcoming book The Truth About Men: What Men and Women Need to Know.
The book draws upon Franklin’s own struggles as a man and explains how his faith has shaped his understanding of what it means to be a godly father, husband and son.
“Franklin provides a manual for how men can change, on both a personal and societal level by providing practical solutions for helping men learn how to resist temptation, how to practice self-control and how to love,” the book’s online summary reads.
Franklin is an outspoken Christian and has written on the topics of love, abstinence and marriage before. However, he says this book is different.
“The Truth About Men in the realest thing I’ve ever written because it’s the most transparent,” he said in a recent Instagram post. “Sometimes as men, we don’t want to talk. So many of us –– we suffer in silence. That’s one of the biggest truths about men. Most people don’t realize how much pain we actually go through. And what I realize is that sometimes most men that are in pain, inflict pain. It’s an emotional pain sometimes –– a spiritual pain.”
Franklin says that pain can turn men into “dogs” who mistreat women.
“Because we are not acknowledging what we’re going through we sometimes perpetuate it even to those we love the most,” he explained. “Too often we treat women like they’re conquests to our achievement versus understanding and treating them like the women and the humans that God has created them to be. I do believe as men we can do better, we can be better, and truth be told –– we can stop acting like dogs.”
