LISTEN: Former LU Students to Return Diplomas in Protest of Falwell’s Support for Trump (UCNN 08/21/17)

1. The Hill – Former students at Liberty University are preparing to return their diplomas in a group protest of university president Jerry Falwell Jr.’s support for President Trump’s agenda. In a group letter first reported by NPR, a small group of alumni is criticizing Falwell for supporting the president in the wake of Trump’s remarks blaming “many sides” for violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend. The letter slams Falwell for defending Trump’s comments, specifically for his saying there were “very fine people” protesting on both sides.

2. KATV – According to Mark Deymaz, his daughter has been found safe. Emily Deymaz was reported missing on Thursday. According to her dad, Emily is back with her family and is unharmed and safe. No word yet on where she was located.

3. PEOPLE – Civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory has died, his family has confirmed. He was 84. Gregory’s son Christian Gregory announced the news in an Instagram post late Saturday night, confirming that his father — who had been hospitalized for a week — had passed away in Washington D.C.

4. Daily Beast – The University of Texas has begun removing four Confederate-era statues from a main area of campus because the monuments “represent the subjugation of African Americans.” University of Texas President Greg Fenves announced the move late Sunday night, saying the monuments have become “symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism.” Crews were in place Sunday night to dismantle the statues, and they were expected to be gone by Monday morning.

5. LU News Service – Fleet Browning, 84, a longtime member of the Liberty University Board of Trustees, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 18. His service to Liberty spanned four decades, starting in the 1980s. He was recently named an emeritus member of the board. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Oakey’s North Chapel.

6. AP – The owner of a home-built submarine has told investigators that a missing Swedish female journalist died onboard in an accident and he buried her at sea in an unspecified location, Danish police said Monday. Copenhagen police said the submarine owner will continue to be held on preliminary manslaughter charges. They declined to provide further details. The statement did not identify the submarine’s owner, Peter Madsen, 46, but the Danish inventor’s financing of the project through crowdfunding and first launch of the UC3 Nautilus in 2008 made headlines. Kim Wall, a 30-year-old reporter, was aboard Madsen’s submarine on assignment when she disappeared more than a week ago. Madsen has denied any wrongdoing.

7. ESPN – Football has been a priority for Anquan Boldin. But after 14 seasons, more than 200 games and nearly 14,000 yards receiving, the veteran wide receiver now feels a higher calling, which is why he left the Buffalo Bills on Sunday after only two weeks with the team and plans to retire. “Football has afforded me a platform throughout my career to have a greater impact on my humanitarian work, and at this time, I feel drawn to make the larger fight for human rights a priority,” Boldin said in a statement to ESPN.com. “My life’s purpose is bigger than football.”

As you go throughout this day, keep this word in mind: Colossians 3:1 says, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”

Jim Rohn said, “Either you run the day, or the day runs you.”

God loves you. He always has and He always will. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” If you don’t know Jesus as your Saviour, today is a good day to get to know Him. Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose from the dead for you. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Thanks so much for listening and may God bless your day!
