LISTEN: Senate Confirms Neil Gorsuch (UCNN 4/7/17)

1. Reuters – The Republican-led Senate on Friday gave Donald Trump the biggest triumph of his young presidency, confirming his Supreme Court nominee over stout Democratic opposition and restoring a conservative majority on the highest U.S. judicial body. The Senate, which last year refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama’s nominee to the court, voted to approve Republican Trump’s pick, Colorado-based federal appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch, to the lifetime job. Gorsuch’s confirmation ends the longest Supreme Court vacancy since 1862 during the American Civil War, with the court down a justice for almost 14 months since long-serving conservative Justice Antonin Scalia died on Feb. 13, 2016.

2. Reuters – The United States fired cruise missiles on Friday at a Syrian airbase from which President Donald Trump said a deadly chemical weapons attack had been launched, the first direct U.S. assault on the government of Bashar al-Assad in six years of civil war. In the biggest foreign policy decision of his presidency so far, Trump ordered the step his predecessor Barack Obama never took: directly targeting the Syrian military for its suspected role in a poison gas attack that killed at least 70 people. That catapulted Washington into confrontation with Russia, which has military advisers on the ground aiding its ally, President Assad. The Kremlin denounced the strikes as illegal.

3. CP – As allegations that the Potter’s House Denver pastor Chris Hill had an affair with a married church member continue to swirl, the member’s husband recently announced that he is “separated.” Meanwhile, the megachurch is remaining mum. The allegations were first made in a mass text message sent by Hill’s wife of more than 20 years, Joy, to members of his 7,000-member church in Colorado. In the text, Joy Hill alleged that she was able to verify that her husband carried on an affair with their young goddaughter, Shirnae McFarlane, who got married to Arthur McFarlane III on September 26, 2014. The initial report indicated that Pastor Hill subsequently took a month off his duties at church while his married goddaughter and alleged lover was fired from her job at Potter’s House Denver.

4. Charisma – President Donald Trump recently announced a new “hire” to his administration that will likely send liberals’ heads spinning. Although the announcement has not yet been formally made, several news outlets are reporting the president has selected Tennessee state Sen. Mark Green (R-Clarksville), the leading candidate for that state’s governor in 2018, to become Secretary of the Army. The West Point graduate was a medic for the special operations team that captured Saddam Hussein and wrote a book about the experience titled A Night With Saddam. He’s also an evangelical Christian who holds to the biblical definition of marriage. This is particularly relevant because he will be replacing the first openly homosexual civilian leader in the Army’s history, Eric Fanning.

5. The Tennessean – Erica Gilmore says she just wants to honor one of Nashville’s most prominent pastors — someone whose congregation has grown from 175-members 25 years ago to 30,000 today. But the at-large Metro councilwoman’s proposal to name a small overpass bridge on Jefferson Street after Bishop Joseph Walker III, pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, has stirred an unexpected debate in the Metro Council, particularly among some of the council’s African-American members. The bridge spans just one block between 11th and 12th avenues over the interstate. Gilmore’s ordinance ultimately advanced by an overwhelming 29-1 council vote, with four abstentions, Tuesday night, setting up a final vote in two weeks.

6. AFP – Boko Haram Islamists have abducted 22 girls and women in two separate raids in north-east Nigeria, residents and vigilantes said. In the first attack on Thursday, the jihadists raided the village of Pulka near the border with Cameroon where they kidnapped 18 girls. “Boko Haram fighters from Mamman Nur camp arrived in pickup vans around 6am and seized 14 young girls aged 17 and below while residents fled into the bush,” a Pulka community leader said. “They picked four other girls who were fleeing the raid they came across in the bush outside the village,” said the community leader who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals.

7. Charisma – A very damaging article just out from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) clearly shows that Target CEO Brian Cornell regrets his company’s policy announcement welcoming men to use women’s restrooms and fitting rooms. WSJ interviewed a representative from the American Family Association (AFA), who launched the immensely successful #BoycottTarget initiative nearly a year ago. The 1.5 million-signature boycott has sent the strong message to the retailer that its misguided and potentially dangerous bathroom policy is the reason millions of families are no longer shopping there. According to the article, Cornell expressed frustration about how the bathroom policy was publicized without his permission or knowledge, and told colleagues he wouldn’t have approved the decision to flaunt it with a public statement that is still on Target’s website today. WSJ reported that Cornell told staff that “Target didn’t adequately assess the risk, and the ensuing backlash [AFA boycott] was self-inflicted.”

As you go throughout this day, keep this word in mind: Isaiah 41:13 says, “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.”

Lin Yutang said, “Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.”

God loves you. He always has and He always will. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” If you don’t know Jesus as your Saviour, today is a good day to get to know Him. Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose from the dead for you. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Thanks so much for listening and may God bless your day!
