It’s not an Oscar, but it’s a start.

Andy Serkis took home the Best Actor honor (over Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne) at the Jameson Empire Awards in London. The actor was psyched to finally be awarded for a motion-capture performance.

HUGE thanks to the fans & everyone @empiremagazine completely humbled. And thank you @mattreevesLA @20thcenturyfox pic.twitter.com/vxh598ntHF

Serkis, a pioneer of mo-cap acting, took home the trophy for his emotional performance as the CGI Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

His Apes director, Matt Reeves, was pumped about the award, too:

YAYYY, ANDY!!!“@empiremagazine: And the Best Actor goes to… Andy Serkis of the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Hail Caesar!” @andyserkis
