Bethany Hamilton is about to venture into uncharted waters: she’s pregnant!
The championship surfer is expecting her first child — a baby boy! — with her husband, youth minister Adam Dirks, in early June, she revealed in a video on Sunday.
“We have a little surprise for you … baby on board!” Hamilton, 25, says in the sweet clip.
“She’s pregnant, yes!” quips Dirks.
The mom-to-be is 22 weeks along — and “prowling” for boy names — and says life has been a whirlwind since the couple found out they were starting a family.
“It’s been a pretty crazy last four months, finding out that we’re going to be parents and life’s going to be changing,” the Soul Surfer author shares. “[We’re] starting to prep for bringing a new little being into the world.”
But her pregnancy has yet to slow Hamilton down: She’s still surfing and plans to keep going until her bump gets in the way. “Once the belly’s pretty big, maybe [I’ll] just mellow it out and spend more time swimming, just enjoying the ocean and doing other activities,” she explains.
Just as she navigates late-night feeds and life with a newborn, Hamilton — who lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003 — will also learn to care for her son with the use of only one arm. But the expectant surfer isn’t breaking a sweat over the challenge.
“I’ve been thinking about it, but I often forget that I have one arm,” Hamilton shares. “When I think about it, a squirming baby and changing the diaper … I think how I live life, just adjust and adapt to different things, especially things that are a lot easier with two arms.”
She continues, “There’s going to be things that will be very challenging with one arm, but I’ll just have to find my own way to take care of this baby. Of course, I’ll have Adam to help, but if he’s out and about busy, I’ll have to … figure it out and be creative.”
